VORTEX
GENERATOR MADE EASY
To
make a vortex generator is a lot easier
than it sounds; John Tyndall would make
them to fire unpleasant smells at people
passing by his window at the Royal Institute
back in the 1800's.
Things you need:
Scissors, and some adult supervision.
1 x paper tube. “Pringles” crisp tubes are
ideal. Keep the plastic lid.
1 x Balloon.
Sticky tape.
A little talcum powder.
Remove the sealed end of your Pringles tube
so you can now see through it like a telescope.
Using the balloon and sticky tape, cut the
balloon to size and reseal the end of your
tube. Make sure the balloon is tight
like a drum skin.
Cut a clean round 2.5 cm hole in the centre
of the plastic lid (a two pence piece is
a good template).
Again, use some sticky tape if the lid is
not a good fit.
You have now made
your vortex gun. To help you see the
vortex, sprinkle some talcum powder inside
the tube shake it, point the tube away and
with a quick flick to the drum skin you
should see vortex rings start floating through
the air.
